As part of the Royal Mail Resilience Initiative, Prometheus was working with principal contractor Mace to undertake a complex range of major M&E works at the Peterborough Distribution Centre.
Electrically, this involved the replacement of the main LV Panel, load centres, distribution board replacements & high level busbar replacement along the full length of the loading bay area. This challenging project has also included the removal of a complex integrated network which controlled the CHPs and generator, and also controlled the load shedding of the electrical system should a G59 event occur. This was removed in sections, ensuring that the automated system remained stable.
Mechanically, the works included general refurbishment of eleven supply and extract air handling units; replacement of 2 CHP Plants with 2 new air handling units; major upgrade and modifications to the BMS wiring and strategy; a new packaged boiler system, and replacement of 2 packaged chillers with new. The mechanical works have necessitated complex lifts, including the transfer of a 14 x 4 x 2.5m chiller and a 3.5 tonne engine through a 1.6m hole at second floor height. Prometheus worked with Mace and Royal Mail to produce a Safe System of Work; this necessitated breaking down part of the chiller for the move, and the lift was undertaken successfully and safely using a crane.
All works were being undertaken whilst the Distribution Centre continued to function under its daily demanding workload, and with minimal disruption.
The works follow on from those Prometheus has already completed, including toilet upgrades with full fit out of mechanical, electrical and plumbing services, and the upgrade of the Distribution Centres main hall lighting to LED, complete with the latest in presence detection and automated dimming controls. Due to the highly successful outcome of this installation, Prometheus were asked to upgrade the Road Traffic Workshop using the same luminaires.
